About Dr Liyanage
Dr Liyanage graduated from medical school in Sri Lanka in 2000 before completing his internship in the United Kingdom. In 2006, he moved to Australia and commenced his medical career at Royal Darwin Hospital, where he developed a strong passion for general practice and the value of long-term, continuous care.
As a General Practitioner, Dr Liyanage takes a holistic, patient-centred approach to healthcare. He believes that effective medicine is about more than treating symptoms—it is about understanding each person as an individual, including their circumstances, experiences and goals, and working together to achieve better health and wellbeing over the long term.
Dr Liyanage has particular clinical interests in skin cancer medicine and surgery, diabetes, arthritis and mental health. His personal journey with mindfulness and meditation has further strengthened his interest in wellbeing and the important connection between mental, emotional and physical health.
He has also recently completed further training in PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) therapy, with a focus on applications in arthritis, musculoskeletal injuries and aesthetic medicine.
A strong believer in self-awareness and self-compassion, Dr Liyanage views these qualities as important foundations for overall wellness. His philosophy is captured in his words:
“I strongly believe that learning about yourself by becoming a friend to your soul is the beginning of wellness.”
This philosophy shapes the way he cares for his patients. He strives to create a safe, welcoming and non-judgemental environment where people feel comfortable discussing all aspects of their health—even when those conversations may be difficult. He believes that recognising when you need support, and having the confidence to ask for help, can be the first important step towards positive change.
Dr Liyanage is committed to lifelong learning and regularly updates his knowledge and clinical skills in evidence-based medicine and best-practice healthcare. His approach is personalised, supportive and compassionate, with an emphasis on building trusting, long-term relationships with his patients.
Life Outside Medicine
Outside of medicine, Dr Liyanage enjoys spending time with his family and pets, travelling, staying active and enjoying music—particularly the 70s and 80s, as well as classic ballads.
He enjoys bike riding, group fitness, snowboarding and playing cricket. His love of cricket reached a memorable milestone when he captained his local team to a premiership in the Darwin District competition.
For Dr Liyanage, medicine is ultimately about people: listening, understanding, supporting and helping each patient take meaningful steps towards a healthier and more fulfilling life.
